Taking It All Off

At some point in our lives we have all committed the number one cardinal sin of skincare: sleeping in our makeup. It's no secret sleeping in makeup is bad news. It causes clogged pores, which can result in breakouts and even premature aging. Yet even with this knowledge, every so often a part of me doesn't think washing my face is worth leaving the warm, comfy sanctuary that is my bed. To combat this, I have an arsenal of makeup removing products, which can be used at almost any level of motivation.

The most traditional form of makeup remover comes in a liquid like this Sephora Triple Action Cleansing Water. While it is effective, it does require the use of cotton rounds. While the directions say it is not necessary to wash the face after use, I personally always feel the need to follow up with a cleanser.

One of the newest trends in makeup removal involves using an oil-based cleanser, which melts away your makeup before rinsing. Of the ones I have tried, this Algenist Anti-Aging Melting Cleanser is my favorite. You apply the product to your skin while it is dry and massage in until your makeup has been melted into the oil, which you rinse off. This product really delivers on it's promise to melt away makeup and goes to work in seconds. The only negative to this product is that many people find it is necessary to follow up with a second cleanser to ensure all the oil is gone. An oil base can also be messier, which is why some people prefer liquid makeup removers.

Finally, the most popular method of makeup removal is pre-soaked wipes like the Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes. Of all the methods, wipes are definitely the quickest and easiest. However, they are also not nearly as effective. Because of this, makeup wipes should always be followed up with a cleanser. That being said, on our laziest nights a makeup wipe is certainly better than nothing.

The Elusive Search for the Perfect Face Mask

I, Jessica Ramage, am a self-confessed face mask junkie. There is no better way to end my day than  Netflix, a face mask and a glass of wine. According to Mintel.com, many Americans agree with this sentiment and the use of face masks is on the rise, growing %5 in the last year. The face mask market is rapidly expanding and new products are hitting the shelves every day. But what is the right face mask for your skin needs? Today we will be taking a look at three categories of masks: Mud/Clay Masks, Hydrating Masks and Brightening Masks.

Mud/Clay Masks
Mud and clay masks are great for deep-cleaning your skin and getting rid of the dirt and grime beneath the surface. Kaolin clay and charcoal, the most popular active ingredients in this category, are known for their ability to pull out impurities and clear clogged pores. These masks are highly recommended for those who are struggling with acne. However, use caution if your skin is easily dried out.
At $69 for only 1.2 oz, the Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment is certainly a splurge item, but it is ultra effective at clearing stubborn acne. I use this mask as a spot treatment every other day.

Hydrating Masks
I turn to hydrating masks during the harsh winters here in Rochester, NY. Hydrating masks are great especially for dry skin types. While those with oily skin can still benefit from hydrating masks, some may cause more excess oil.

My sensitive skin loves everything from First Aid Beauty and this Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask, priced at $22 for 2 oz, is no exception. The oatmeal is incredibly soothing and helps with the sting while also providing the hydration my skin needs.

Brightening Masks
Brightening masks help to boost the overall quality of complexion, while also targeting discolorations like acne scars and age spots. My skin is very fair so any acne leaves long lasting scars, so brightening masks have become a regular part of my routine. Brightening masks are a good fit for all skin types.
The Boscia Bright White Mask, priced at $38 for 2.8 oz, is one of the most unique masks I've found. Like most brightening masks, it is loaded with Vitamin C to target discoloration. However, instead of the traditional wash-away masks, this one dries to a latex-like consistency that's meant to be peeled off the skin. This provides an extra boost of exfoliation to reveal newer, brighter skin.
